EMDR Therapy

A gentle, supportive path to healing

Many people come to therapy feeling stuck or carrying painful memories, patterns, or beliefs that just won’t go away—no matter how much time has passed or how hard they’ve worked to move forward. If that sounds familiar, know that you’re not alone.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a trauma-informed therapy that helps people process difficult or distressing experiences in a safe, structured way—without having to relive them or talk through every detail.

It’s a deeply respectful approach that honors your pace, your story, and your nervous system’s need for safety and stability.

What Is EMDR?

When we go through something overwhelming—whether it's a single event or something that happened over time—your brain sometimes isn’t able to process the experience the way it should. That can leave you feeling stuck in survival mode, even long after the danger or difficulty has passed.

EMDR can help you from difficult past experiences, reduce the intensity of distressing triggers, and process memories so they no longer carry the same emotional weight. It also helps you identify negative beliefs and replace them with positive beliefs that allow for healing, growth and change. During EMDR sessions, your therapist will guide you to briefly focus on certain thoughts, emotions, or body sensations while engaging in gentle bilateral stimulation (BLS) —such as eye movements, tapping, vibrations, or sounds. This rhythmic, back-and-forth stimulation activates both sides of the brain. BLS helps shift distressing memories to a more adaptive part of the brain, allowing it to be stored as something that is truly in the past.

EMDR Can Support Healing From

  • Trauma (including acute, complex or developmental trauma)

  • Emotional neglect or abuse

  • Anxiety, panic, and phobias

  • Depression

  • Dependency or addition to substances

  • Loss, grief, and heartbreak

  • Chronic shame or self-criticism

  • Difficult life transitions

  • Relationship wounds or attachment injuries

  • Persistent negative beliefs (e.g., “I’m not good enough” or “I’m not safe”)

A Safe and Supportive Process

EMDR follows an eight-phase process that begins with building safety, trust, and coping skills. You are always in charge of the pace. Nothing is forced, and you never have to share more than you’re comfortable with.

Your therapist will work collaboratively with you to create a plan that feels supportive and empowering. Throughout the process, we’ll focus on helping your nervous system feel regulated, grounded, and capable of integrating what comes up. You will learn different strategies to help reduce tension and distress, and increase regulation.

Many clients describe EMDR as a turning point in their healing—a process that helped them feel more connected to themselves, less burdened by the past, and more present in their lives.
