Navigating Grief:
Honoring the Journey Through Loss
Grief is one of the most profound and personal experiences we face as human beings. Whether it stems from the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a major life transition, recovering after an illness, or even the loss of a dream, grief has a way of reshaping our inner world. It can come in waves—sometimes quiet and reflective, other times overwhelming and disorienting. Mary-Frances O’Connor describes grief as “an amputation of a part of ourselves, or an absence that weighs on us like a heavy cloak.”
There is no “right” way to grieve. It is not a linear process, and it certainly doesn’t come with a clear timeline. Some days may feel manageable, while others may feel impossibly heavy. With time you might find yourself feeling better, lighter, only to be overwhelmed with sadness and despair the next week. Emotions like sadness, anger, guilt, confusion, and even moments of peace may all coexist. This is normal. This is grief doing its work, and it feels a little different for everyone.
Navigating grief means allowing space for what is showing up for you—without judgment. This isn’t easy, and sometimes, it’s really really scary! It means showing ourselves compassion as we move through the pain, anger, loneliness, and uncertainty. Sometimes, it means reaching out for support, whether through a trusted friend, a support group, or a therapist who can gently guide us through the healing process.
In the midst of loss, it's important to remember that grief is not something we “get over.” It’s something we learn to carry differently over time, making space for both joy and sadness. With care, patience, and support, the sharp edges of grief can soften, and life can begin to feel meaningful again—even if changed.
Grief reminds us of the depth of our love and the significance of what we’ve lost. Honoring it is part of honoring our humanity. If you need additional support as you navigate a loss, please reach out to schedule a consultation with Sarah today.
